Shockwave Therapy

Instrument being used for shockwave therapy at Peake Physical Therapy in Baltimore, MD

You don’t have to live with pain or undergo risky surgical procedures. Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive solution. If you are living with pain or muscle damage, it’s a great solution to jumpstart the process of healing your damaged muscle tissue. And we’re ready to help you right here at Peake Physical Therapy, Baltimore, MD.

Shockwave therapy is the process of delivering shock waves to damaged areas of muscle tissue to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. It jumpstarts the healing of damaged muscles while simultaneously relieving pain. The shock waves promote faster, long-term healing and regeneration of damaged muscle tissue. It is ideal for providing you with speedy recovery and pain relief.

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave therapy reduces pain and jumpstarts healing in soft muscle tissue by delivering a series of shock waves of energy to targeted pain points where injured muscle tissue is present. It speeds up the tissue repair process and cell growth, promoting healing.

Shockwave therapy is part of the physical therapy wheelhouse. It benefits you by relieving pain without having to undergo a risky surgery with a lengthy recovery period. It also means you won’t have any need for painkillers that can be addictive by nature.

Are shockwave treatments painful?

Fortunately, shockwave therapy is not painful. When you undergo shockwave therapy, you may feel a small amount of pain, typically just a slight feeling of discomfort. Many people who have undergone the procedure say it feels like minor pulsations on different parts of the skin. However, although you may experience some discomfort during the procedure, it doesn’t carry the risk of surgery or the pain after surgery.

When do I need shockwave therapy?

You are an ideal candidate for shockwave therapy if you have chronic pain or injured soft muscle tissue that hasn’t responded to traditional treatments such as physical therapy. Generally speaking, if you have had a condition that has lasted six months or longer or if you have tried traditional therapy with no results and have issues negatively affecting your quality of life or mobility. For example, if you feel pain in your heel every time you take a step or compensate for pain by walking with even the slightest limp. It is also ideal for issues with tendons, ligaments, and the body’s major joints.

Many people leave chronic issues untreated, causing new and more serious issues to develop. Shockwave therapy is used in a variety of disciplines, including physical therapy, orthopedics, sports medicine, urology, and even veterinary medicine.

Shockwave treatments are an excellent non-surgical option for a wide variety of issues. This can include:

  • chronic pain
  • plantar fascitis
  • tendonitis
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • shoulder tendonitis
  • rotator cuff issues
  • tennis and golfer’s elbow
  • sports injuries
  • kidney stones
  • chronic stress
  • urinary issues

How effective is shockwave therapy?

When do I need Shockwave Therapy

Shockwave therapy has been proven to be effective for a variety of musculoskeletal issues. It is consistently used as a non-invasive, safe, and fast-working alternative treatment option compared to surgical options. A clinical study of results showed that people undergoing shockwave treatment showed significantly reduced pain and improved functionality.

In addition to being effective, shockwave treatments are considered very safe and cost-effective compared to alternatives.

How many sessions do I need?

Shockwave therapy is generally done once a week for 3 to 6 weeks. If you desire, sessions can be as close as 4 days apart. You should not need more than six sessions, less depending on the severity of the damaged tissue. Fortunately, a single treatment takes just around five minutes.

You will likely begin to feel the healing effect of shockwave therapy soon after your procedures. However, it typically takes about 15 to 16 weeks to experience the healing benefits fully. This is when the muscles begin the process of regeneration after the damaged muscle has healed.

How much does shockwave therapy cost?

Shockwave therapy is a very cost-effective treatment for pain or muscle damage. On average, standard low-energy treatment sessions cost between $100 and $300 per session. Low-energy treatment is cost-effective in comparison to the option of high-energy shockwaves.

High-energy shockwave treatment allows you to undergo just one treatment. Yet it is a bit more expensive, ranging from $1,000 to $3,000 for a one-time procedure. In-office financing is often available.

Does Insurance cover it?

Although shockwave therapy has proven to be a highly effective way to cure muscle pain and promote healing, most insurance plans do not recognize it. Please get in touch with us for pricing and payment options.
