Back and neck pain can be caused by trauma to the body. This could include a fall, sports injury, or car accident, for example. Trauma can cause fractures, muscle or ligament tears, spasms, or nerve damage. Back and neck pain can also be caused by degenerative disease such as arthritis, scoliosis, cancer, infection, sciatica, or a herniated disc.
In many cases, back and neck pain can be evaluated and treated by a physical therapist. This can either be as part of your first line of care or post-surgery rehab. Your PT can use various diagnostic tests and tools to first determine the cause of pain. PTs are movement specialists specifically trained to identify and address issues affecting your neuromuscular system. This includes your spine, joints, nerves, tendons, muscle, and ligaments. PTs may also work with other medical specialists, such as orthopedic surgeons, to provide you complete medical care.
Physical therapy and rehabilitation works to help your body repair and strengthen nerves and tissue naturally on its own. This includes targeted exercises, stretches, and manual therapy. The goal is get you pain-free and fully mobile preferably without the need for any further surgery or medications.
